Background:

Data from the Minnesota Department of Education tells us that:

  • recent math scores in grades 3-8 show that white students are performing at higher levels than students of color.
  • English learners and special education students are demonstrating lower math proficiency rates compared to more affluent native English speakers.
  • white students are outperforming every other racial and ethnic group. 
  • there is a gap in graduation rates with white students at 85%, black and Hispanic students at 57% and American Indian students at 49%.

Study Data:

Longitudinal studies in 2006-2007 and 2010-2011 of two ACES groups found that frequent ACES participants had higher high school attendance and graduation rates, as well as higher reading proficiency scores and better school engagement.
