ACES Youth Score Big on Social-Emotional Learning with Minnesota United and Target
ACES students are always learning, whether they’re solving math problems, building teamwork on the court, or showing up for their communities. And last month, they proved once again that their social-emotional learning (SEL) game is next level.
In partnership with Minnesota United FC and Target, a select group of ACES students were taken on a special field trip. Without knowing their destination, they boarded a bus with Program Directors Kelley and Marie. Upon arriving at their local Super Target, students walked inside where they were greeted by Minnesota United players Michael Boxall and Robin Lod, Loons mascot PK, and a team of enthusiastic Target personal shoppers ready to give them a back-to-school shopping experience that was anything but ordinary.
Each student received a $200 gift card, generously donated by the Minnesota United FC Community Team, to pick up everything on their school supply list and more. Once backpacks, pencils, and notebooks were crossed off the list, students had the freedom to shop for items that would help them feel confident and comfortable heading into the new school year.
“This opportunity and this incredible gift that the Minnesota United is giving us is going to help the families immensely,” Program Manager Marie Regala reflects. “It just takes that burden off of their shoulders.”
What impressed everyone most was how many students chose to shop not just for themselves, but for the people they love. From picking out presents for baby siblings to grabbing extra supplies for cousins and parents, our students showed the kind of generosity, empathy, and social awareness that’s at the heart of the SEL skills they’re practicing in the classroom.
At ACES, we often say that when students feel empowered, they show up for their communities. This shopping trip was a powerful reminder that our youth carry their SEL skills with them wherever they go, using them to make their world a little brighter.
Thank you to the Minnesota United FC and Target for helping our students start the school year strong.
