Problem of the Month: December 2021

Our latest curriculum unit, Athlete Health, had students strengthening foundational math concepts and practicing goal setting. Try your hand at multiplying fractions and celebrate the Minnesota Wild’s recent win streak with the December Problem of the Month. Scroll down to see the solution!

The Minnesota Wild players are thirsty after their latest win! The 10-gallon cooler is 9/10 of the way full of Gatorade. If the players drink 8/9 of the Gatorade, how much Gatorade do they drink?

We start by multiplying fractions.

Multiply the numerators from each fraction (the numbers on the top). The result is the numerator of the answer. Multiply the denominators of each fraction (the numbers on the bottom). The result is the numerator of the answer.

(9/10)x(8/9) = 72/90

Then, simplify or reduce the answer.

72/90=8/10= 4/5

Thus, we know that players drank 4/5 of a full cooler of Gatorade. To find the total volume consumed, we multiply by 10 gallons.

(4/5)x10=8 gallons.

The Wild players drank 8 gallons of Gatorade!
